Definition
in a complement clause construction, this is the semantic property that the time reference of the complement - event is determined by the time reference of the matrix clause - event. Example: in Sally persuaded John to make the cake, the time reference of John's making the cake is dependent on the time reference of Sally's persuading him – it must follow the persuading event.
