Definition
the morphosyntactic category in the active alignment system that co-expresses some S roles – in particular, the S role of 'walk' – and the A role. Example: in Lakhota, the index ya- 'you (sg.)' in ó-ma-ya-kiye 'you help/helped me' and ya-ʔu 'you (sg.) are coming' expresses the active category. (Section 6.3.3)
