Definition

the set of propositions evoked by the constructions in a sentence 'which the speaker assumes the hearer already knows or is ready to take for granted at the time the sentence is uttered' (Lambrecht 1994:52). Example: in I'm grateful that you finished cleaning the house, the proposition that you finished cleaning the house is presupposed, while the proposition that I am grateful about it is asserted.
