Definition
in a complement clause construction, this is the semantic property that the time reference of the complement - event is not determined by the time reference of the matrix clause - event. Example: in Sally thinks John made / is making / will make the cake, the time reference of John's making the cake is independent of the time reference of Sally's thought. (Section 18.2.2)
