Definition
a strategy for the complement of an utterance event in which the form as well as the content of an utterance is expressed. Example: in Sandy said, 'I'm buying the house', the complement I'm buying the house is presented in its original form – the speaker is not asserting that s/he is buying the house. A direct report strategy may be accompanied by a quotative marker. Although the direct report strategy originates with utterance complement clause constructions, it is also used with other complement clause constructions lower in the Binding Hierarchy. (Sections 18.2.2, 18.3.2)
