Definition
the strategy for comparative (and possibly equative) constructions which directly expresses two of the propositions that form the meaning of the comparative: that the gradable predicative scale applies to the comparee, and that the scale applies to the standard. That is to say, the independent strategy recruits a different-subject, simultaneous temporal complex sentence construction (usually a coordinate clause construction) to express comparison. The conjoined comparative and particle - strategies are examples of the independent strategy. (Section 17.2.3)
